Delta Commissioner spoke at the opening of the Singapore International Water Week

News item | 30-06-2010

On Monday 28 June and Tuesday 29 June, the Delta Commissioner attended the Singapore International Water Week.

At this wide-ranging international water event, the government commissioner gave two speeches (that will be available later on this website). He spoke about the innovative aspects of the Delta Approach and about the Delta Programme.

On Tuesday 29 June, the Delta Commissioner visited the Holland Water Pavilion and the Marina Barrage. The construction of this large dam has resulted in the creation of a big freshwater reservoir for Singapore. Furthermore, Wim Kuijken visited the National University and he had talks with representatives of the Singaporean government and the business community.

The Singapore International Water Week brings together the global water sector (policymakers, the business community and the sciences) to tackle challenges, discover opportunities, demonstrate new technologies and reflect on successes achieved in the area of water management.

This year’s theme is: Clean and Affordable Water. The participants will be focusing this week on the need for efficiency and affordable solutions for tackling water problems in a constantly changing environment. Over half the world’s population lives in urban areas and this trend will continue at a fast pace. In addition, more and more of these urban areas are situated on the coast and in deltas. The Dutch approach to water problems is therefore of interest to other countries and places the Dutch water sector firmly on the international map.
