IJsselmeer region
Climate change is leading to a reduction in the freshwater available in the summer in the IJsselmeer region as a result of evaporation and a more limited inflow of (river) water. On the other hand, the demand for freshwater is rising due to prolonged dry spells and increased soil salination.
The cabinet has chosen to strengthen the strategic freshwater function of the IJsselmeer region. A study into the freshwater supply could yield answers that will be decisive in how we use the IJsselmeer. In 2015, a long-term decision will be made about the water-level management of the IJsselmeer which will also consider issues such as safety, freshwater supply and ecology as well as the quality of spatial planning.
The IJsselmeer Region sub-programme is the responsibility of the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment.
