Rivers
The rivers region consists of the Dutch section of the Rhine including tributaries (upriver and downriver) and the Meuse River. Over the past centuries, the rivers have received increasingly less room because ever more space is being used for living, working and recreational activities, with the result that the rivers are clamped between increasingly higher dikes.
The vulnerability of our country combined with the unfavourable predictions about climate change and rising sea levels make it clear that sustainable protection against high water – both now and in the future – must remain a high priority. The Flood Risk Directive will be taken into account when making future agreements. In this respect, we are explicitly examining the consequences of climate change in the areas of discharge, water quality, ecology and water temperature.
The Rivers Region sub-programme is the responsibility of the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment.
