The Coast
How can we in the Netherlands protect ourselves from the sea in the century ahead? What measures do we need to take in order to ensure that our coast is and remains safe? And how can we reinforce the coast while at the same time ensuring that our coastal areas offer room for economic activity, recreational activities, working and living? Under the Delta Programme, the Coast sub-programme is responsible for exploring what we need to keep our coast safe, economically strong and beautiful. To that end, the Coast sub-programme is developing a National Vision on Coastal Development, focusing on the period up to 2050 with a view beyond, to 2100.
In the years ahead, the bottlenecks, possible solutions and strategies for preventing sea floods will be investigated. Another point of focus will be the long-term safety, economic strength and appearance of the coast. The Coast sub-programme is working towards these goals by conducting explorations and learning from innovative practical projects, such as the ‘Sand Motor’. In addition, the sub-programme conducts exploratory studies to establish whether the current financial, technical and legal frameworks suffice for shaping integrated long-term coastal development.
The Coast sub-programme is a collaborative effort of the central government, provinces, municipalities, water boards, civil society organisations and knowledge institutes within the framework of the Delta Programme.
Summaries of action plans within the Delta Programme
The sub-programmes of the Delta Programme have drawn up action plans outlining the plans and decisions being prepared in the time ahead. A summary of the action plan formulated by the Coast sub-programme is presented below. The National Coastal Development Framework, which was adopted in March 2011, indicates which developments are desirable with a view to coastal safety and which are not, and outlines the conditions these developments must meet.
