The Coast
The safety of the coasts of Zeeland, Noord- and Zuid-Holland and the Wadden islands is guaranteed by adding sand. The cabinet has chosen to increase the height of the coastal foundation in line with the rise in sea level. This is done by adding sand which, in time, will take place in a new way, based on the natural distribution and relocation of sand along the coast. To keep pace with the rise in sea level, sand requirements in the Netherlands will increase within a relatively short period of time.
In 2009-2010, the Federal Government will investigate how fast these developments are progressing and how much sand suppletion is necessary. In this regard, attention will be paid to the expected development of the rise in sea level, the amount of sand that the coastal foundation is losing and the availability of sand for sand extraction.
The Coast sub-programme is the responsibility of the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment.
